Build a Software Library

A friend just told me about a way to build a software library by joining a club and test driving new software before deciding to buy it or not. That’s a pretty cool idea!

He says anyone can join the software library club for free and give the club concept a try for 25 days. When you join you get to choose 2 of the software CDs that they have available from their website and try out the software at home, no charge. Even if you don’t keep your club membership you get to keep the 2 free CDs, so you have nothing to lose by giving it a try.

They have software from good categories, too, including:

Because of my work and personal interests, I’m always on the lookout for clip art and photos that are free or unrestricted for public use. I clicked over to the graphics category and found software that includes “20001 Greatest Clip Art,” “5001 Greatest Photos” and “1001 Greatest Fonts.” I want all three but have the choice of 2 for signing up with the club. I have to think that over for a bit and then decide on which two to start with.

Anyway, if this is something that catches your interest, too, the name of the club is CD Earth and if you decide to join, let me know how it works out for you.

Kentucky Derby

It’s been Derby Week in Louisville and I wish I could be there this year. I think I read that this is the 134th running of the race. Imagine that!

With things at work so crazy, I can’t get away. I’ll have to watch it on TV - or maybe go down to the sports bar for a couple beers and watch it with the guys.

I have always loved watching horses race, and have been known to win a bet or two over the years.

What is it they call the Derby? The most exciting two minutes in sports?

Backgammon Break

Years ago backgammon became fashionable again and everyone was playing it. I’ve played since I was a kid, so it was nice to have other people present themselves as worthy opponents. Then I discovered backgammon online and now I always have an assortment of available and willing opponents for a quick game. One of the first online backgammon sites is Backgammon Masters. It is easy to get started - just download their game application and jump online to find a game.

What I like about the game is that it is fast and although easy to learn to play, there are definite skills to learn and playing against an advanced player sharpens your skills. Backgammon is good for a mental health break of 10-20 minutes, or you can hunker down on a cold and rainy day and play for hours.

This morning I noticed there is a link on the backgammon site to play poker and blackjack. The graphics here are really good and the game play has been excellent, so I suspect that the poker and blackjack games are just are good.

With the new movie out, called, “21,” I wonder if there will be a renewed interest in playing blackjack. The movie is based on a true story, and the real MIT players are going to be involved with the game operators of this site to test the new game platform and blackjack calculator that they’ve developed. It will be interesting to see if the MIT kids who could beat “the house” in Vegas can also beat the computer online.

NFL Draft

Today’s NFL draft held quite a few surprises and I’m still watching the final rounds on ESPN.

It is always interesting to see how the coaches and team ownership try to reshape their teams each spring. There is a lot of money at stake and the decisions made during the draft will affect a lot of people over the next several years.

I was glad to see Chris Long go to the St. Louis Rams. I am not a big Rams fan, but they are a good team and they did well picking Chris Long.

Chris Williams went to the Bears. I have mixed feelings about that. I like Chris Williams a lot and the Bears really need his talents, but I kinda hoped Chris would go to a better team. I hope this won’t be a waste of his talent and that he does well in Chicago.

SOCOM blog

Found out the my favorite game Socom has a blog written by the developers of the new SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. If you do not own a PlayStation 2 or PSP then you probably have not had the pleasure of playing this 3rd person shooter that is probably the best game ever made on the PlayStation, unless you were at a friends house.

Anyways this new Socom is going to the best one yet, and the first one of the Socom series on the PlayStation 3 console. To many new features and improvements to list here on my blog but you can read about a lot of the new features on the Socom blog by clicking over and checking them out your self.
